HAUNTED LOVE : Darkness in Diamond City Ep
By Amanda Mills
Dunedin has a fine tradition of producing dark, enigmatic music, and Haunted Love, the latest band in that line, are surely one of the more unique. The duo of Geva Downey and Rainy McMaster initially came to prominence when the video for their song Librarian became a viral hit on YouTube. Now, with the addition of guitarist Logan Valentine, Haunted Love have an added edge to their sound, Valentine’s guitar giving a sense of expansiveness to the music and an atmospheric backdrop to the vocals. Mastered by Dunedin’s Tex Houston this is the trio’s first recording, and full of pop songs that have a unique tone. Whether it be the dark radio-friendly appeal of Sleepwalkers, or the confessional teenage gothic lyrics of Into the Night; the David Lynch-esque cinematics of Lonesome Doves in the Family Tree (Lynch is an influence), or the girl-group harmonies and faux wall of sound production of Darkness in Diamond City. Haunted Love have the potential to join the canon of great Dunedin bands, and I can’t wait to hear what they do next.
