EASY: Easy

As it sounds, but that’s not to say the band haven’t had their share of challenges getting to this point. Born in 2004 from the Poetry In Motion jam nights at K Road’s Rising Sun pub/nightclub, founding members Maia Rata (vocals), Perry Hooper (guitar), Jared Greenwood (guitar/bass) and Daniel Pilkington (bass/guitar) decided to get more serious and in 2006 added drummer Richard Beckmanflay and saxophonist Tom Mee. After recording a dozen tracks for a debut album, in 2008 they lost both their drummer and manager so took a break, coming back with new drummer Dan Bishop and percussionist Paaka Edwards. Ditching the previous material, they started again and recorded these tracks in January. Apt, as it’s a typical NZ summery vibe of funk, soul, dub and rock flavours. All rather generic with not much to differentiate it except for a few self namechecks, a slight Specials vibe on a couple of tracks, and significantly, an incredibly clean recording. Not sure if they’re just as smooth live, but dirtying it up a little would make things much more interesting.
