HER MAKE BELIEVE BAND: AM Radio

By Shaun Chait
Kudos to Her Make Believe Band for using recycled cardboard and a bio-degradable CD tray. Their sound is pretty recycled too, indeed not dissimilar to what you’d have heard on (’80s) AM radio. Playing the sounds-like game on this record provides some interesting reference points – The Eagles (Stay), Jeremy Taylor (Lonely Soul), Tim Finn (Nobody's Business), Dylan and The Waterboys (That’s Why I Like You The Best), and then the second half veers off into indie territory (D.P.H) and even Split Enz-meets-The Police styled reggae (Ba Bah). So what to make of it all? I've heard the term alt country tossed around with this band, but that’s really only telling half the story. Playful pop is another. There are some catchy little ditties here, and that can only ever be a good thing. Produced by the band and recorded at Livingston Studios in London – where some members currently reside.
