REBEL PEASANT: The Walls Of The Well
By Shaun Chait
Unless you’re like Phil Collins or something, drummers aren’t supposed to make solo albums. But this isn't really a solo album (except in the songwriting sense), and the fact that the guy pulling the strings has a day job as a drummer is almost totally disregarded. Another outing from the somewhat prolific Phoenix Foundation stable (where now all have stepped ‘solo’ style), this time its Ritchie Singleton’s turn. And like those PF associated albums that have gone before it, there’s plenty to like here. Fully instrumental and featuring the now expected guest line up, this one includes members of The Phoenix Foundation, Black Seeds, Cassette (Tom Watson even given the odd songwriting credit), Little Bushmen et al. Stylistically, aside from forays into dub, one can also hear sounds reminiscent of TPF, Flaming Lips and Radiohead. This stuff is soundtracky, mood based, concept-y and not in any great hurry – you get the drift. Some tracks you get lost in; others get lost themselves. Recorded mostly in Singleton’s home studio or at the Wellington Car Club, Lee Prebble and Brett Stanton mix.
