CAIRO KNIFE FIGHT: Iron
By Amanda Mills
Christchurch’s Nick Gaffaney has been much in-demand as drummer for Fat Freddys Drop, Goldenhorse, Anika Moa and Dimmer (among others), but his focus has recently been on his own band Cairo Knife Fight. Formed two years ago, their debut album ‘Iron’ (originally a solo project for Gaffaney), emphasises the band’s rock-soul hybrid style, with some interesting beats thrown in for good measure. With the addition of guitarist Aaron Tokona bassist Richie Pickard and backing vocalists Roslen Langton and Katie Taylor, Gaffaney has assembled a fine band that can tackle the rock of Moving, the slow grooves of Woman, rhythmic intricacies of Iron, and the hook laden pop of Better with ease. Recorded at Cleavetown and Roundhead studios, ‘Iron’ is polished, with Cairo Knife Fight’s personality stamped all over it. Gaffaney treats the drums as a lead instrument and his unadorned vocals ground the album. It readily ticks all the boxes for individuality, musicianship and creativity.
