DYLAN STOREY: Out Of the Soup
By Tony Parker
Auckland singer/songwriter Dylan Storey evidently set out with a head full of thoughts, some guitars and pianos but with no real direction on where he was heading, hence the album title. The resulting set of songs did emerge with a concept of sorts, one that explores the human condition and the fate of mankind in general. In doing so Storey asks a lot of questions in a philosophical way though the jury is still out as to whether he provides the answers. Stylistically he treads a line between classic southern rock and jam band psychedelica, with a nod to alt country that features some swampy slide guitar and the vocal help of fellow singer/songwriters Reb Fountain and Johnny Barker. It’s a sound that sits comfortably with the raspiness of his voice and it has its successes, most notably on Lies Make an Honest Man and Sold it all Away where Storey focuses on hooks and melodies to help sell his vision.
