TAHUNA BREAKS: Black Brown & White

By Adam Burns
You have to acknowledge the work ethic of Auckland funky monks Tahuna Breaks. ‘Black Brown & White’ follows up on 2007 debut ‘Reflections’, not bad for a Kiwi band that has only been in action for four years. One of the main challenges for Tahuna Breaks it would seem is capturing a piece of the live atmospheres and feeling in the studio. Enter Lee Prebble and the Surgery studio. Wellington’s favourite musical doctor took the Breaks’ various stylistic fusions so evident in the live environment and gave back an album that for the most part transcends Kiwi bbq reggae reference points via The Black Seeds or dDub. The album is possibly 15 minutes too long, with a few tracks stuck in mundane reggae mode, but with the Parliament-styled funk of Giddy Up and the acidic funk meets soul of We Funked The Party you can’t help but get involved in this skankin’ good time. It even offers an unexpected ballad in the form of Somebody’s Daughter that evokes the bluesy moodiness of Wellington outfit Tommy. Despite the odd uninspired moment, ‘Black Brown & White’ is Kiwi funk at its unashamed best, which will have many people getting down like James Brown this summer.
