50Hz: Carbon
By Liz Barry
50Hz is one of those Wellington studio producers I've followed with interest during the past few years. Selected work (mostly instrumental) has appeared on various Loop compilations and I've always had a sneaking suspicion that 50Hz (Jeremy Geor) was going to unleash something 'big' on us in the near future. Now he has and what a wonderful surprise. 'Carbon' features an impressive guest cast of singers and players from around the country. Vocalists include Ladi6, formerly of Sheelahroc and now of Verse 2, Miss La from Auckland jazz band The Torch Set, former Wham! backing vocalist Pepsi Demacque, Conrad Noema from Maori R&B band Maia and Barnaby Weir of The Black Seeds. The backing crew credits include other well-known Welli music figures. Technically, 50Hz is a brilliant world-class producer with massive music talent to match and 'Carbon' is one of the coolest, most exciting and enjoyable albums of 2002.
