SALMONELLA DUB : Freak Local (EP)
By Adam Burns
Salmonella Dub have been known to throw the odd remix compilation or EP release in between their full lengths and that pattern continues here. Kaikoura’s finest dubsters have a compiled a nice little appetiser for their seventh studio album focusing on the eccentrics of their homeland. Tuhoe diva Whirimako Black whose wailing moodiness has worked wonders in the past is a beautifully suited ally on the sulky jam Dub Cakes with The Mighty Asterix making an understated contribution on Madness. There aren’t too many stylistic suprises of note here with more of the distinct atmospheric dub reverb and occasional dancefloor skank which the title track is based on. Clocking in at just over twenty three minutes, you could argue this is one just for the Sal Dub faithful but nevertheless ‘Freak Local’ serves as a funky wee taster.
