ADRIENNE HINDMARSH TRIO : Blue Skies

By Amanda Mills
Formerly based in Wellington, now Columbus, Ohio, the Adrienne Hindmarsh Trio may be familiar as The Vipers. A lack of jazzy Hammond organ players in NZ led Adrienne to take up the instrument, transcribing material by Jimmy Smith, Joey DeFrancesco and Jack McDuff, and eventually triggering her relocation to the US last year. ‘Blue Skies’ is her third album, featuring jazz covers and one original in Rainy Day Blues. While well executed, and pleasantly sung, there is little special here – the arrangements are similar to the original recordings, and while the addition of the Hammond does lead to a point of difference, it also gives this recording a lounge vibe, especially on Fly Me to the Moon and My Baby Just Cares to Me. Pleasant enough as background music.
