LYDIA COLE: Love Will Find A Way (EP)
By Shaun Chait
This five track EP is the debut outing from 21 year old Aucklander Lydia Cole who is already generating strong interest, including Neil Finn amongst her fans. Cole comes from the (older material) Jewel side of singer songwriters – earnest, touching slow burners with acoustic guitar and piano stylings. She has a pretty, if familiar voice, and the use of viola and cello instrumentation compliments this rather sombre affair. This is a classic debut EP with Feels Like as the centrepiece – a new talent full of promise, but not quite ready for a full album just yet. Lyrically she’s a little clumsy at times, seeming intent on rhyming at all costs. I also feel the choice of an instrumental as one of the five tracks offered is a little unwise because this is a more than adequate and very listenable bunch of songs. Made at Roundhead Studios with Neil Baldock recording and Nic Manders producing.
