THE SEPTEMBERS : Edge of the World
By Tony Parker
The Septembers place a lot of faith in their classic two guitars, bass and drums line up and as might be expected produce a jangly pop-rock sound that seems to suit the wistful and somewhat forlorn vocals of singer-guitarist Anthony Stretch. It’s a fairly conventional sound that highlights Stretch’s way with a melody and his mastery of minor key melancholy. Combined with the sonic explorations of guitarist Sean Harvey the album invites comparisons with the work of Teenage Fanclub or Belle and Sebastian. The use of strings and horns in places adds to an atmosphere that can best be described as sadly beautiful, something reinforced by moody vocals from Stretch that are often tinged with regret and loss. Taken as a whole the various elements of the album lead to a consistency of style and sound, although an injection of intensity in places would have created a more powerful outcome. That aside, The Septembers have produced an album of well-crafted songs that sit well within the widescreen atmospherics of their pop-rock jangle.
