BACHELORETTE: My Electric Family
By Simon Sweetman
As Bachelorette, Annabel Alpers has been creating her own bubbling, floaty electro-pop world for a few years now. And as she has moved up from EPs to albums, adding collaborators and an American label (‘My Electric Family’ is released under her own imprint in NZ but will be available internationally on Drag City) her sound has progressed. Still a dark and moody bath of electro wash with alt-pop vocals, but there’s no storm as such; these songs are a happy experience – definitely not the sort of album that you would unhappily call a difficult listen. The Royal NZ Air Force Band was used on one track, Dale Cotton (HDU, Die! Die! Die!) helps out to good effect and Tom Watson and Craig Terris (both from Cassette) also had a hand in the recording. Moving from dance grooves, to sashaying pop music this is Bachelorette’s finest album to date. And the fact that she was invited to America to tour with Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and Smog (as well as doing her own shows) should prove there is an international audience for her electric music. She deserves success.
