FALTER : As Far As I Can Get From Here
By John Paul Carroll
Among the hardest working local bands of the mid 2000s, Falter are renowned for relentless touring, fast guitars and possibly slow cars as their fastidious work to date hasn’t yet resulted in a well-deserved big label record deal. Their latest recording offers a blend of punk ethic with Americanised arrangements and far reaching production to create a sound that is so ‘not Kiwi’ that you can actually imagine Fallout Boy being visibly concerned with finding yet another stunningly well-rehearsed, pop-punk-glam-rock band in an already saturated market. But there is substance here, and repeated listens reveal impressively composed pieces performed with intensity; all the ingredients for a modern-emo-punk-rock pie. Some of the mixes lack that kick to really smack-face and force the listener to take notice, but this album still serves as hard evidence that Falter remain one of the hardest working around. If you enjoy the energy that Falter instills into their live performances then you best believe ‘As Far As I Can Get From Here’ has got it in spades.
