The Datsuns: The Datsuns
By Jacob Connor
Already charted in the UK, hit the top spot here and selected 'CD of the month' by Q magazine, this album is a grab bag of dumb fun swiping licks from HLAH, Free, the Kinks, AC/DC, Kiss and a whole parade of guitar rockers from decades past. What it lacks in substance it makes up in enthusiasm and tongue-in-cheek, cock-of-the-walk good humour. Instant frivolity tumbles out the speakers while you play join the dots between multifarious sonic references. There's nothing cerebral, it's all hormones and head down–hair out retro rockin'. Influences aside, the band are road tested seven year veterans and deliver an assured debut. Recorded in Auckland and London, the studios used to reproduce songs as live and organic as possible. There's a good visceral punch and some confident classic rock chording. A trippy inside-out time-warp ride, it would be unpatriotic not to get in behind.
