LISA CRAWLEY: Hello, Goodbye and Everything In Between (EP)
By Amanda Mills
After leaving London, and her role as part of Rodney Fisher’s (Goodshirt) live band, Lisa Crawley returned to NZ last year. She recently won the 2008 Pacific Songwriting competition, and has since released this second EP recorded with her band The Conversations (whose members are also parts of The Mint Chicks, Hot Grits, and The Subterranes). The five tracks are well structured and draw the listener in. A multi-instrumentalist (from piano and guitar to the recorder), Crawley also has a strong singing voice which veers from cute to husky, encapsulating many tones and emotions. This is especially prevalent on the bluesy These Friends of Mine and Good Lord, two songs which stand out for their strong lyrics and elegant melodies, while Back to You is buoyant and catchy with an almost 1960s beat. ‘Hello, Goodbye’ was produced by Crawley, her band and Goldenhorse’s Ben King, and while a little theatrical in some parts (Brother could have come from a musical), this EP illustrates strong songwriting and quirky delivery.
