FAT FREDDYS DROP : Dr Boondigga & The Big BW
By Shaun Chait
The second studio album offering from Fat Freddys is a lot like watching the Warriors this season: knowing their renowned flair, how entertaining they are live, and what they’re capable of, I get frustrated by too many plays that go nowhere. Recorded, engineered and mixed by Mu in Lyall Bay, the ‘Big BW’ spans 70 minutes. While that may not be surprising given the live jam focus of the band, there aren’t many recorded tracks in history I can think of that have justified an eight minute outing – a mark four of the nine tracks comfortably run past. Don’t get me wrong – there’s plenty of goodness on offer and tasty stuff to sink your teeth into as Freddys inevitably get their groove on. The two catchy shortest tracks (Boondigga and Pull The Catch) are clearly single material, and the dubby gem The Raft is certainly one you can lose yourself in. The Nod, with its party in the kitchen theme, goes from sublime to ridiculous in one song. Generally I prefer the dub and reggae moments to the soul, funk and jazz ones on this record.
