Twinset: It's a Summer Feeling
By Nick Batt
Persistent driving rhythm, hot sax, and cool organ Ð Twinset have it all! Teamed from the start of their second year at the Wellington Polytechnic Conservatorium of Music in 1996, Christopher Yeabsley (organ), Daniel Yeabsley (alto sax, flute, percussion) and Paul K Hoskin (drumset), have created a superb album. Captured over two days at Cable Street Studio by Lee Prebble and Bret McKenzie, the album is an addictive mix of jazz, funk and reggae Ð sort of Booker T meets Monty Alexander. Featuring superb musicianship and beautifully recorded, Twinset lay down foot tapping beats over which they add driving rifts and sublime solos. You have to keep reminding yourself that this is the work of a trio and not a larger group as the groove is so wide. This is Twinset's third album but their first through Capital Recordings. I'm off to hunt out the others.
