EVERMORE: Truth of the World: Welcome to the Show
By Amanda Mills
Genuine concept albums are notoriously tricky; they can become classics or, more readily, turn into an artistic mistake. Evermore’s third album has atmospherics reminiscent of 'Dark Side of the Moon', yet the trio inevitably sound more like My Chemical Romance than Pink Floyd. To endure, a concept album must have thematic unity and a strong, considered point to make. While some melodic motifs are carried through to give musical coherence, the album mainly relies on that phrase ‘truth of the world’. The songs illustrate storytelling as well as commerce Max Is Stable fills in the overarching theme, while single Hey Boys And Girls is aimed at the charts, though difficult to place when removed from its contextual surroundings. The album was created entirely by Evermore’s ambitious (and by all accounts bored) Hume brothers. Lead vocalist/guitarist Jon produced, engineered and mixed the album at Melbourne’s Dragonfly Studios, drummer brother Dann co-producing. ‘Truth of the World’ is ambitious and reveals plenty of creative talent, but ultimately lacks the meaningful substance and showmanship of a classic concept record. It was the kind of album that Evermore wanted to make, a re-think of their approach might now be in order.
