SIMON SPIRE: All Or Nothing

By Robecca Leydon
The New Zealand born, New York based singer/songwriter has accomplished a lot in his short life thus far. And with the transition from New Zealand to the U.S, he has a shiny, new debut album to add to the mix. Not too bad for a first record.‘All Or Nothing’ has a simple, pleasant melody that definitely slides into the easy listening category. Inside Out and Dying Daily highlight the artist's lyrical talent. Spire has the ability to engage in blatant self exposure, whilst at the same time he refrains from alienating his audience; translating his experiences to a wide spectrum of people. Transcendence into the unknown is something everyone is sure to go through, and Simon uses his personal journey, in the pursuit of musical success to illustrate this. The melodies sit well, with an agreeable mix of modern rock and acoustic tones; they complement his American accented voice and have a soothing effect. The songs are often simple and fresh, at times verging into pop territory, although this doesn’t stop Spire from exhibiting considerable talent on the acoustic guitar (have a listen to the opening of track one).
