PITCH BLACK: Rhythm, Sound and Movement

By Martyn Pepperell
Rude Mechanicals Remixes
In my opinion the best songs on this CD are Simon Flower’s melodic techno remake of 1000 Mile Drift, and Kerretta experimental rock reworking of Bird Soul. Apart from that ‘Rude Mechanicals Remixes’ is dull, lifeless and boring. As the album tile suggests, this release is a collection of remixes of songs off Kiwi electronic pioneers Pitch Black’s last album; remixes handled by the likes of International Observer, Patch, Neon Stereo and others. Sadly though, despite the great engineering, mixing and mastering that colours the whole release, the majority of remixes on this disc feel more like rush-jobs done as favours then anything else. Don’t get me wrong, Pitch Black were architectural to the development of electronic music in NZ, but with this release something isn’t right.
