THE BENKA BORADOVSKY BORDELLO BAND: Polkapocalypse
By Simon Sweetman
I had heard about The Benka Boradovsky Bordello Band, but had never heard them. I liked the fact that the group has worked with bands like The Hot Grits, The Jews Brothers and An Emerald City; all are great, high-energy live acts, all have an intensity to their performance. And I had heard the same of the Bordello Band. Debut full album, ‘Polkapocalypse’, on the back of last year’s ‘Danse Macabre EP’, definitely confirms this. The eastern European flavours of gypsy folk are infectious, melodies are woven and layered, falling in and over themselves as the pulse is pushed and pumped; a groove always stated with a clear party energy. The album features three originals – modeled on traditional tunes – and there are five traditional pieces also. Finally there are a couple of fun covers (The Dead Kennedys, The Tiger Lillies).
