DAVID FEEHAN: Bronze

By Tony Parker
It’s been 18 years since vocalist David Feehan put out an album, which is not to say he has been quiet on the music front, focusing instead on vocal tutoring, performing and mentoring over that period. Now returning with a collection of “… songs I like to sing”, Feehan showcases his voice on a set of jazz/rock covers and originals with soul and pop leanings that has the listener immediately wondering if they’ve stumbled across a long lost Toto or Michael McDonald record, circa 1982. It’s an album awash with horns, jazz funk rhythms and ‘tasteful’ guitar and keyboards, all combined with technical perfection, creating a sound so smooth and professional that it can seem to slip by un-noticed. Indeed, while it can’t be argued that Feehan and his fellow musicians have put their heart and soul into this album, the end result is so slick as to be soul-less. Only when we get to the end where Feehan reverts to straight ahead jazz with Jerome Kern’s They Don’t Believe Me do we get a sense of emotion and connection with the music, but by then it’s too late.
