HORROR STORY: Songs From The Devils Jukebox
By Ania Glowacz
From deepest, darkest Taranaki (or New Plymouth to be precise) come our very own horror punk rockers, Horror Story. If you’re unfamiliar with this genre, you really need to check out The Misfits (who are seminal) and the gloriously ghoulish vocals of Glenn Danzig. This sub genre combines punk, psychobilly and schlock rock, and is a lot of fun – rot & roll, gigs with ‘fiends’ of ours etc. The song titles tell you pretty much all you need to know: Cemetary Girl, Coffin Club, Zombie Peepshow, Bloodrinking 101 and the like. Horror Story have been around since 2000, releasing several albums and EPs while going through quite a few member changes. Along with 14 new songs the bonus with this release is an out-of-print 7-track EP ‘The Sons Of Hell Island’, recorded 06/06/06. The most important elements of this style of music is ripping, grunty punk riffs, retaining musical interest over a whole album with a specialist theme, and most important of all, a strong vocal. These guys nail it, they have got some serious chops, as well as all the right reference points. Some more photos would have been welcome, but in the meantime, fangs a lot fellas.
