CINEMA 90: Cinema 90
By Jacob Connor
This 5-track EP is the first release of studio producer Jamie Newman under the Cinema 90 moniker. The vibe is positive, as evinced by song titles like Feel the Sun and So Sweet but producer and label (Monkey Records) are smart to avoid genre tags. There is a house music sensibility evident, though each track is led by a quite different guest vocal, from the delay-drenched diva warblings of Clare Simmons and Mimsy Cable to the rapid staccato attack of T-Minus. So Sweet congregates around a spare tick tock rhythm, Sunny Day Juice showcases some crisp rap tactics (albeit in an early ’90s style) and World You Are pauses for a piano refrain. Feel the Sun sports some cool synth bass and You and I shimmers in a spare summery haze. Think friendly beats and divas ala Cruise Control. You could accuse the collection of being a somewhat innocuous grab bag of passing talent, but it serves well as a tasty introduction, an out-of-season tapas platter.
