BROADBENT • GIBSON • SMITH: Together Again

By Tony Parker
Alan Broadbent and Frank Gibson are unarguably leaders in the jazz field, not only here in NZ, but also internationally. Last year, at the instigation of drummer Gibson, they reunited with LA bassist Putter Smith to produce this gem of an album that focuses on what they do best. Joined by saxophonists Chuck Manning and Gary Foster the trio swings through a set of free flowing melodic tunes that illustrates an easy going and seamless musical relationship born out of years of performing together. This is true ensemble playing that also allows plenty of room for each of the participants to stretch out as they cover a number of Broadbent originals interspersed with standards such as Charlie Parker’s Relaxin’ at Camarillo and Sonny Reed’s Teef. What makes this album though, aside from Broadbent’s inventive piano playing, is the way each player has brought their technical skills to the table without forgoing the heart and soul of the performances. As reunions go this is a delightful surprise, albeit one that is long overdue.
