DYNAMO GO: The Fool of Fountain City

By Robecca Leydon
Formed in 2005, this 6-piece Hamilton band now have a delectable debut album, the result of a little melody, sugar-laced with hauntingly satirical vocals. The lyrics are often sad; always cynical, offset with a soft pop beat which has become their signature niche. One stand out feature is that the singer is always one step removed from what is going on. This works well as it carries on from each song, sort of building upon a story seemingly based around an anonymous female central character. In songs like Fountain City the lyrics revolve around two ambiguous lovers, while in Crying On My Street, the female is the object of lust for the singer. There is also some great musicianship, shifting from indie pop all the way through to soft melodies, verging on ballads. All in all the subtle and simple pop melodies juxtaposed with a dark satiric humour create a wonderful tension, beautifully colouring the catchy songwriting.
