GOOD LAIKA: Followed By A Trail Of Sparks
By Simon Sweetman
There’s a deceptive charm and intensity to this band’s music, a blend of indie pop and rock with soulful singing. It sneaks up on you, indelibly making its mark with a stateliness that could be underrated. I find this new album less optimistic than their debut, ‘Heads I Win, Tails You Lose’, which I really enjoyed and still play. Lyrically more insular and subdued; it fits in to that ‘sad sack’ indie pop feel without ever becoming the sound of shoe-gazer rock. What it comes down to is a certain confidence – and this band has that, two albums in seven years is not exactly flooding the market. And both albums promote the distinctive sound of a band that is more than just the sum of some rather obvious influences. Good Laika appear to have an x-factor and it’s in fine form on this sophomore release.
