ANTIFORM: City In Exile
By Martyn Pepperell
The Antiform formula as it comes across here: Take a well known and respected NZ artist, ask them to feature on a well engineered but soulless, fast-food breaks or drum and bass beat and hope for something artistically greater the straight instrumental Antiform production. Sometimes this formula works (in a pop sense on Crash featuring MC Twincam), other times it doesn’t (as on Blood Spilt featuring Angelo Munro of The Bleeders). In-fact, scratch other times, make that often times. This debut album from the Auckland breaks/drum and bass trio seems a watered-down run through of everything that ever appealed to me about English bass music (from jungle onwards). For a reference, in terms of sonic aesthetics, imagine a club-friendly version of the Matrix soundtrack, but released eight years too late.
