RICHARD ADAMS • NIGEL GAVIN: Recent Works
By Tony Parker
Why violinist Richard Adams and guitarist Nigel Gavin have waited so long to record a duet remains a mystery as their work together in the Nairobi Trio has shown there was no doubt the pair could produce an album as masterful as this. Drawing from gypsy swing, classical and Arabic influences the duo bring their improvisational skills to the fore on a set of original tunes that feature the beauty of Adam’s violin set against the dexterous virtuosity of Gavin’s 7-string guitar. Rhythmically and melodically the pair work together with the ease and empathy expected from musicians who have played together for many years, and where others may have accentuated their technical ability these two search for the emotion at the centre of the songs while still allowing each other room to explore their own instrumental voice. Atmospheric and expressive ‘Recent Works’ moves at its own diverse pace. Whether it be the stately grace of Daisy Chain or the percussive frenzy of the only non-original track, Ellington’s Caravan, all make for a magical beauty that is somewhat unique.
