MOTOCADE: Tightrope Highway
By John Carroll
This Auckland band four piece have had their names thrown up in alternative coloured lights so many times by critics in recent years, success must feel almost natural. With the release of their debut album ‘Tightrope Highway’, the much vaunted indie rock outfit have coalesced 11 of their best for commercial mass production and consumption, transcending stereotypes by producing thoughtful, challenging, quirk-rock masterpieces of an uncomplicated perfection. Lyrics that stoke the fires of imagery yet remain agonisingly aloof from the obvious, guitar lines that lead and nurture songs like a devoted shepherd and a rhythm section that would require a surgical procedure to separate. The singles released only hint at the depth of repertoire across this album. My personal favourite Flying Saucer refuses to insult the listener’s intelligence, instead mixing sublime with bizarre, yet demanding attention and earning satisfaction. Highly recommended, ‘indie’ for the rest of us.
