THE MOON WHISPERS: Pearl Of Blood

By Ania Glowacz
Elisa Di Napoli returns with another beautiful record. The electronics and gothic themes are gone this time, in their stead is a stripped down acoustic affair with a very European feel. Beautiful instruments such as cello, viola and piano underpin the most important instrument of all – Elisa’s voice. She has a strong and beautiful voice, echoing Loreena McKennit or PJ Harvey, but on this release she is fully channelling Edith Piaf, complete with plaintive feel, or something a bit Celtic. While Elisa is Italian and not French, she has also lived in Ireland, Scotland, England and NZ (although perhaps not for much longer with her sights set on Europe), and all influences are woven together in these beautifully told tales. Slightly melancholy, but never depressing – more charming, beguiling, and slightly teary. Co-produced with Phil Riley (who also contributes drums) and mastered by Neil Maddever at Sounds Studios in Wellington, it’s rich, folky storytelling with a gothic edge. Moody and magical. •
