Anjelka: An-jel-ka
By Mahinarangi Tocker
At 19, songwriter Andelka presents an excellent production of 'class A' musicians, Nigel Gavin and Ashley Brown to name a few, on a debut which rollercoasts in teen angst and sarcasm. Some exciting assortments of musical arrangements but Andelka's singing is hard to embrace. I could listen to only a few tracks at one time. Sometimes I'm reminded, (in a good way), of vocal sounds of some female punk singers that I used to listen to in Melbourne in the '70s. However, whereas those singlet-leather-clad gals intended to sing sharply and with words often inaudible, I can't think this type of vocal sound, incongruent with the musicians, was Andelka's intention. I hear her songs as confident but her voice changes the dynamic with thin fragility that loses the grip of melody. Andelka is a competent pianist with a decent amount of knowledge to pull this album together. An-jel-ka is a self distributed CD.
