CORSICA: Sight of the Sun
By Bing Turkby
Corsica sound a bit like The Doors and The Bats jamming together at an acoustic folk festival. Featuring musicians who performed in the Noel Redding Band, the Kiwi connection is Keith Dion of the Ponsonby DCs - who also have a recent release out. Now based in San Francisco, Dion and friends fit the flower power vibe of that city in times past. Their's is a laid-back trip rather than a hectic psychedelic blast, a mellow acoustic sound, with the violin and viola of Sandy Poindexter added to various tracks. The guitar parts are subtle yet intricate, as in the spidery lines in the breakdown section of Lights of Tuscany. Redding's work with Fat Mattress had a similar feel. Some songs, like Safe Harbor, build to a crescendo without becoming frantic, the deep timbre of Brad Orgeron's vocals get impassioned without becoming overexcited. Corsica's album is an introspective affair. It's more on the 'coming-down' side of things, but still a good late-night vibe-setter. Also a good album to listen to on headphones, to appreciate each instrument in the soundscape, fluttery fingerpickings tickling your ears.
