CLAP CLAP RIOT: TV Knows Better

By Stephanie Gray
The demand for all-ages gigs from fans nationwide testifies to the appeal of this four-piece guitar band, already well regarded for top-notch live shows. With just enough insouciance to get the girls' attention, Clap Clap Riot belt out their songs like rebels with due cause. On City Lights, a standout song on their five-track EP, front man and guitarist Stephen Heard tells it like it is, singing "I'm getting lost in the city lights/No I won't be coming home tonight" with bratty flicks of vocal inflection backed up by drummer Sam Mountain. Their debut release, 'TV Knows Better' was notably produced by the D4/Luger Boa's Jimmy Christmas who is also credited as co-writer. Opening with the definitely-danceable Don't Want Your Baby, the EP closes with Die - another stunner featuring splashes of tambourine, enough room for the bass to come through, and wickedly-timed back-up vocals. They seem like such nice young men, and I'm sure that, en route to Australia and Japan (where their talents will surely take them) they will squeeze in enough all-ages gigs in provincial NZ to keep the kids happy.
