SUE THOMSEN: A Part of Me

By Amanda Mills
Sue Thomsen is a Nelson singer/songwriter and as the album name suggests this is a good example of developed pop music with personal/universal lyrics. After creating demos in her home studio Thomsen used the services of Rick Stokes who took on production, mastering and engineering mantles, as well as being a talented multi-instrumentalist. The results are pleasing: Her songs are well constructed, the performances solid throughout, and any extra instrumentation well placed within the clean production. Thomsen's lovely melodic voice, slightly reminiscent of Jenny Morris, adds depth to the lyrics which range from thoughts of love and life, to the beauty of and affinity with NZ to the possibility of life from other planets. A highlight is Wonder Why which is built on a simple melodic motif repeated in the guitars, and shows effectively that Thomsen has a knack for melodies and arranging, putting the lyrics slightly in the shadow. 'A Part of Me' should have appeal for those who appreciate well written mature pop.
