SECOND GEAR GRIND: Fistful Of Silver
By Ania Glowacz
Fans of Kyuss and Down will not be disappointed with this. Hailing from Christchurch, Second Gear Grind immediately fuse elements of '70s and '90s rock almost seamlessly - there is nothing forced here. Dirty rock 'n' roll borrowing from Sabbath, Deep Purple, Nirvana and Pantera equally, and some blues. It's nothing if not rousing. There's only four tracks on the EP but they make it count over nearly half an hour. A 5-piece band, with able vocals from Steven Bell, solid gat from fellow founder member Mike Cheer, some slamming bass from Adam Patchett, more gat from Kalem Mallon and James McLean on drums. This band have all the ingredients to carve out a solid niche. There's nothing gratuitous or cheesy here and the band deserve to have higher profile support slots than they've had so far. Another three tracks of equal quality, a cover redesign and these guys should be sitting pretty on the Top 10 NZ metal albums chart. Well worth checking out if you're into the genre. A particular highlight, both musically and lyrically is The River And The Dead Meadow. These guys would make a great Kyuss support act.
