KNIVES AT NOON: Knives At Noon
By Simon Sweetman
Tim Couch (drums), Andrew Ketels (guitar), Tim McCartney (vocals) and Oli Wilson (synthesisers) are Knives At Noon. Their self-titled four-track EP showcases lively original compositions which feature a dance-music bounce with pulsing synth lines, recalling everything from The Who's 'Tommy' to Faithless. McCartney's voice combines with the drums in open space to attempt the atmosphere of post-punk legends Joy Division. But the music does not have the same darkness and with Daisy Chain there's a guitar line that comes from the Johnny Marr book. It's good fun music and I can see fans of Cut Off Your Hands really digging this. I'd like to hear a full album or a full live set as I imagine this group gets better with more room to explore; four songs, whilst all very immaculate, just feels a bit too short. In that sense, I wonder if the group has sold itself short with just an EP.
