CHARMAINE FORD/NICK TIPPING/RICHARD WISE: After The Last Dance
By Shaun Chait
I'll readily admit jazz is not usually my field, but even a self-proclaimed non jazz aficionado can recognise the quality in this release. This is impressive and captivating stuff. The energised piano playing of award-winning Ford is a revelation and the support from bassist Tipping and Wise on drums gives her plenty of freedom. Eleven O'Clock opens the account with a flashy introduction to Ford's innovative and fresh playing style. There's no let up and you are left feeling as if you're in some grand hotel, dressed to the nines and... well I don't know if it was the drinks or that pianist, but I'm feeling a bit light headed and need a lie down. Blending latin and swing into a whirr of changing time signatures and tempos, this is jazz composition unlike my limited jazz ears have heard in NZ. Produced by the trio with Alistair Isdale, recorded at the NZSM Concert Hall in Wellington and mastered by Mike Gibson at Trident, this album displays impressive composition and delivery.
