AUDIAC: No Come Down
By John Carroll
This debut from Melbourne-based Audiac is a classic rock romp rife with the Oz rock flavour (think Jet, Thirsty Merc) while still hinting at the band's Kiwi heritage. Powering the sound are some delightfully creamy drums, riffs that feel like the lovechild of Tom Morello and Noel Gallagher and a voice that evokes images of the Sex Pistols crashing a Cure concert. The stand out track would have to be Astro Pussy, a thrash-country-blues-rock tune complete with a guitar noise intro that invites you into the band room. From there, the song has its way with you and spits you out within two minutes, but not before vocalist Andrew Schraa reaches his vocal nirvana (and I don't mean the '90s grunge gods). Recorded in London and deftly mixed at St Kilda's Hothouse Studio, the album wears its international pedigree proudly. Recommended to fans of any of the artists mentioned in this review thus far, and also those interested in hearing the result of a three car musical pile up involving the Dunedin sound, Oz rock, and '90s Brit rock. It was the Brit rocker's fault.
