JULIE LAMB: Most and Least
By Amanda Mills
A self-confessed 'late starter', Lamb has created a debut album that has a solid foundation in R'n'B, with the exception of the arresting a capella choral track, Skinny As A Pin Man recorded with Vox Serbicus Choir. Unfortunately, the rest of the album doesn't quite live up to that opening track. The material here was written (or co-written) by Lamb with the exception of two songs by John McLeary (The Spines). Lamb performs those tracks, Your Body Stays and You Will Walk, a little dispassionately. The most personal track here, Cry As You Must began as a poem by Lamb's mother, who wrote it when her daughter was 19. Julie Lamb has obviously laboured over 'Most and Least' and her backing musicians perform with flair, and treat the material with respect. Though hard to fault a record with such a great intent (Breast Cancer Network NZ receives 10% of sales), it still failed to strike a chord with me as I found her voice a little harsh and the music a bit too repetitive. 'Most and Least' would have benefited from more variation.
