Flash Harry: Flash Harry

By Jessie Scoullar
Otherwise known as Barnaby Weir of Wellington outfit the Black Seeds, this is the first release from Flash Harry on capital recordings. Mastered by 50Hz, this debut solo album explores a wide range of musical strains, combining reggae influences with a mixture of diverse and even experimental electronic effects. The resultant soundscapes echo and ripple, with layers of competing and complementing styles occasionally confusing but often pleasing the ear. When they are a feature Weir's lazy-sounding vocals are excellent – I Love Lo-Fi, Morning Rush and Something Back are particularly
catchy. The packaging is stylin' indeed; a grey paper cover with pink disc and fold-out liner notes. Not so cool is the location of the track listing on the liner notes – but they also feature paper doll type graphics allowing one to dress Barnaby in various hats. An impressive debut recommended for fans of contemporary electronica.
