SANDRA BELL: White Nights

By Rhys Morgan
This is the fourth album for Dunedin-based Sandra Bell and is packed to the edges with a talented array of backing musicians playing poetic rock with flickers of gypsy passion. Bell spent some years living in Germany and became attracted to Eastern European music and literature, thus balalaika, violin and accordion appear on several tracks. Plenty of friends have been roped in for this album with the likes of Heath Te Au on drums, John White appearing on violin, Sergei Selinun on balalaika, Dr Bajan on accordion and Jay Clarkson adding guitar and backing vocals. The result is a dark and boiling mix of songs carried strongly by the vocals of Bell who dabbles with her spoken word style and even offers poppy elements in the structure. Worthy of mention is that the recording process was practically a solo effort for Sandra Bell and that she originally wanted to play all the instruments herself. o
