DEVOLO: Heaven & Hell
By Andrew Hughes
Here we finally have the debut solo album by Deceptikonz' hook specialist Devolo. Many wondered when, and if ever we would see Devolo as a solo artist, Mareko even questioned it himself on his 'White Sunday 2: The Book of Mark', so it's great to see Devolo doing the spotlight justice, coming out with a slick selection of radio-friendly joints. The beats knock too, mainly provided by Horseman Family beat-maker DJ Montana, who is assisted by F.B.I (U.S), Mareko and Pacific Icon Management Group (U.S) who all create the bounce with excellent use of samples and synths. Laid back tracks like Take It Back, I Wanna Know and Good Day create a feel good vibe, while Bring It and God Chose Me feat. Savage, provide a more aggressive hip hop sound. Still it's R&B that rules the album's entirety with Devolo's songwriting ability showcased on singles Too Shy and Somebody which let his talent and experience shine through. It's not a groundbreaking album, but definitely a smooth, well-rounded enjoyable listen, executed with class and perfectly suited to a hot summer.
