DARCY PERRY BAND:: Phoenix

By Tony Parker
With four albums and time on the road behind them, the Darcy Perry Band have evolved into a tight blues/rock unit that has established itself as one of NZ's premier blues bands. 'Phoenix' continues their journey and showcases not only their expert musicianship but also their ability to work together to create an authentic sound that compliments the both the singing and songwriting of the band. The album also shows the band moving away from the overt blues influences of earlier records by incorporating rock and soul into the mix creating a sound that they can confidently call their own. Further evidence of change sees bandleader Perry stepping aside in the songwriting department allowing other band members to contribute their own songs and lead vocals while the addition of Miriam Clancy, Georgia Wood and Leeza Corban as backing vocalists adds a soulful dimension to a sound that still features Perry's Chicago influenced guitar work alongside Craig Bracken's piercing harp and Simon Taylor's R&B influenced keyboards. Lyrically the songs rarely stray from traditional territory and at times rely a little too heavily on blues clichés but that aside this is a solid effort from Perry and his band and it reinforces their standing in the NZ blues community.
