Luger Boa: Mutate Or Die
By Simon Sweetman
Jimmy Christmas, formerly from The D4, has resurfaced as Luger Boa - a band, but one that feels very much like a solo project (with Shihad's Karl Kippenburger supplying bass) that has morphed into a band for the sake of performance. That's fine and you can't knock the formula - hey, it worked for Dave Grohl. In conflict with the title this accessible version of retro-rock is not a million miles away from The D4, though overtly more pop-oriented. The playing is fine, but lyrically on occasion it is a bit of a clunker, the rhymes in places troglodyte and the easy options often taken mean it gets a little stale on repeat spins. For me there is too little exciting about this album but others rave and the now-formed live band has been getting plenty of positive notices.
