Kimo: Surrender

By Stephen Heard
Kimo, (previously known as Eskimo) is the baby of Christchurchians Rob Mayes and David Mulcahy. Their involvement in 'Surrender' covers everything from engineering, production, writing, cover art, the little images you get with the lyrics, not to mention playing probably every instrument you could think of. Michael Daly, Namiko Iwamoto and Mark Roberts lend a helping hand to complete the sound and to play the instruments Mayes and Mulchay can't hold. Each track is full of dream-like melodies and choruses that take you along for the journey, drawing you in with a sense of security, Mulcahy's vocals leading the way and keeping you out of trouble. It lulls but then the awesome intricate instrument and melody parts draw your attention back. Watch out for the aeroplane on track six. By track 10 however the feel of some songs seems a bit too familiar and maybe too safe.
