Antagonist A.D: We Are The Dead
By Alistair Wickens
I don't know what it is about this country at the moment but we seem to be able to churn out high quality hardcore bands that deliver albums with the same production values as any good like-minded bands in the world, and with apparent ease. Antagonist A.D, formerly the band known as Antagonist (the name change was the result of negotiations with a US band of the same name), are heavier than a lot others in the local hardcore scene that I've heard. You may not always agree with Antagonist A.D's message, and often on this album it's hard to ignore their morals and beliefs, but it's difficult to argue with music that's this intense and well-structured. The sound harks back to the mid-'90s explosion of straight-edge metal core, and they haven't watered down their sound to try to attract new followers. This release is brutal, blistering and honest, and despite a growing fatigue I feel with the scene I found the album fresh and worth the listen. Recording was done variously by Zorran Mendosa, Nate Sowter and Matthew Livingstone, and the album was mixed and mastered by Zack Ohren.
