Various: Rock N Roll Is My Only Salvation

By Jacob Conner
Following 'All I Want for Xmas is Rock'n' Roll' comes a second Fast Food Records compilation of Auckland's most desperate guitar wranglers. Contributions range in style and execution from down 'n dirty lo-fi gutter trash (The Bloody Souls, The Hodogs, The Incisions, Slavetrader) to the jazzier inflections of Five Car Pile Up and swinging tex-mex of The Dellburgoes. It seems a twisted Frisbee family affair, with some players serving in two or three groups. WWIV offer Neanderthal, a classic I fondly remember from the Source. Frisbee vets Shaft are represented by a stolid Stoogey Evil Eye and there are more esoteric reflections from Xanadu and The Rainy Days. This rock is hewn directly from a coal face deep underground, and it remains to be seen how well it bears up to the light of exposure, but I have a feeling we'll be hearing more of the real oil from Fast Food. The previous comp included the D4, who are now big stars.
