Reb Fountain: Holster
By Amanda Mills
When Southern California-born Reb Fountain arrived in Lyttleton as a child, her love of music was already germinating quite nicely. Combine this with an imaginative writing style and a guitar as a sixth birthday gift, and it was always on the cards that Reb would make music her career. Fast forward a number of years, with a number of bands and a number of experiences along the way, 2008 finds Fountain with album number two, the unconventional 'Holster'. While still showing her love for acoustic-based folk and country, this time there is an edgier feel to Fountain's music, with harder electric guitars and stronger rhythms. '78 stands out as an almost aggressive song, taking influence from the likes of PJ Harvey, while the equally impressive Wrecking Ball and TAB look toward classic rock arrangements with taut guitars and rhythms. Unsurprisingly, the musicianship is impressive. Fountain has a strong, melodic voice that can go between musical styles easily, while her band The Bandits include Jared Kahi (Jester), Sam Prebble and Dylan Storey, along with guests including performing partner Johnny 'Sleepy Kid' Barker. Holster is an accomplished piece of music and definitely on my list of local highlights from 2008.
